The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal’s tax and identification number. This guide explains everything you need to know about the NIF number.
It’s the unique number the tax authority uses to recognize you on contracts and official records. With a NIF, everyday tasks—such as opening a bank account, signing a lease, and setting up utilities—move faster. Your NIF is permanent. It stays the same for life and appears on forms, invoices, tax returns, and many contracts. The tax authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira) issues it and stores it in your record. The NIF itself does not grant the right to live or work in Portugal—it’s simply the number that ties your activities to you.
You’ll be asked for a NIF when you: open a bank account, sign a rental contract, buy a property or car, start a job or freelance activity, pay taxes, or set up internet and utilities. Shops may also request your NIF to be included on invoices. These requests are normal—the NIF is the key to doing business with Portuguese institutions.
You can apply from Portugal or from abroad. The process is simple once you know where to go and what to bring.
Book an appointment and apply in person at a Serviço de Finanças (tax office) or a Loja do Cidadão (Citizen Shop). Bring your passport and proof of address (Portuguese or foreign, if you’ve just arrived). Many offices now work by prior booking; you can schedule online or by phone. The NIF is issued on the spot once your documents are accepted.
You can request a NIF online through the tax authority’s e-balcão service via a legal representative acting under a simple power of attorney (many people use a lawyer or service provider for this). The representative uploads your passport and the proxy and submits the request. The NIF is then issued with your foreign address as “non-resident.”
About fiscal representatives: Getting a NIF does not automatically require appointing a fiscal representative. However, once you create a “tax relationship” in Portugal (e.g., start work, open a business, buy property), you must, within 15 days, either appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal or activate electronic notifications (Portal das Finanças or ViaCTT). This allows the tax office to contact you.
If you already live in Portugal, there’s a growing network of Espaços Cidadão where foreign residents can request the NIF, NISS (Social Security number), and the National Health Service user number in a single visit. Availability is now available in select locations and is expanding. It’s aimed at residents in regular status and saves multiple trips.
Short visit with no contracts, no bank account, and no work? You can wait. Hotels, restaurants, and daily life don’t require a NIF. Once you decide to rent long-term, work, study, or set up utilities, the NIF becomes essential—get it early to avoid delays.
Save a PDF of your NIF document, print a copy, and keep a photo of it on your phone for quick reference when completing forms. If you applied from abroad, consider enabling electronic notifications in the Portal das Finanças so you don’t need a fiscal representative. You can also update your address online after you settle.
Still choosing a city, staying short-term, or not ready to sign anything? Focus on scouting first. You can apply for the NIF later—processing is quick once your plan is clear.
The NIF is Portugal’s primary identification number for banking, renting, utilities, work, and taxes. Apply in person at a Finanças office or online via a legal representative through e-balcão. If you’re already in Portugal, some Espaços Cidadão can issue your NIF, NISS, and health user number together. A NIF isn’t a visa or a residence card, but having it early makes the rest of your setup smoother.
