Cambio de titular, explained for expats

Change the Plenitude electricity holder

By Linus Palmqvist, Head of Operations Reviewed by Simon Nilsson Last reviewed

The electricity at your new home is supplied by Plenitude, and you need the bill in your name. For an active supply, email your request and complete the signature sent by SMS text message. You can call from Spain, but not from abroad.

Settlewell

First: is the electricity still active?

Power still on

Change the holder

The supply is active, so this is a holder change. It is free and takes days.

Power was cut off

Request an alta

The supply was cancelled, so this is an alta: a new activation. It takes weeks and can carry regulated connection charges, plus an electrician's fee if a new certificate is needed.

Do not let the seller, landlord or outgoing tenant cancel an active contract.

How Plenitude handles it

Choose the route that feels easier for you. Both start with the active Plenitude supply.

Customer support team helping people with their move to Spain

Let Settlewell do it in English

We can handle the Plenitude holder change for you.

  • We make the call and handle the Spanish.
  • We file the change and chase it until it is done.
  • It is free.
  • If you are abroad, you cannot phone Plenitude. It publishes no number that works from outside Spain.

Documents to have ready before you contact Plenitude

  • Incoming holder’s accepted ID
  • Supply address and CUPS (the code that identifies your electricity supply point)
  • Bank details
  • Proof of your relationship to the home where needed
  • A mobile that can receive the signing SMS

Contacting Plenitude

There is no overseas household number. Email the request and give a mobile that can receive the SMS signature. Support is only Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00.

If you speak to an agent, say: “Solicito el cambio de titular sin subrogación de deuda.” This means you want the holder changed without taking on the former holder’s debt.

Extra steps for your situation

Start with the part that matches your home. You do not need every document below.

If you rent the home

Send Plenitude your signed lease. It shows your right to use the home. Ask the landlord or former holder not to cancel the active supply.

If you bought the home

Send Plenitude your deed. Keep a meter photo from handover and ask for the change without taking on the seller’s debt.

If the former holder has died

If the Plenitude account holder has died, take the paperwork slowly. Plenitude may ask for the death certificate, your ID and inheritance papers. If inheritance is still in progress, it says you can begin with the death certificate and proof of your link to the home.

After divorce or separation

Plenitude says a judgment or convenio regulador, an approved separation agreement, that gives you use of the home can make the change easier.

If the former holder owes money

Plenitude says the former holder’s debt stays with that person. Tell Plenitude that you are not taking on the former holder’s debt. Send your lease or deed. Old debt can still slow the file.

Things that can slow this down

The Plenitude portal looks like the right route

It is for new contracts. For an active supply staying with Plenitude, use [email protected].

The signing SMS does not arrive

Plenitude needs a reachable mobile number. Check the number in your request and contact support during its weekday opening hours.

Plenitude gives several timelines

It publishes 1 to 3 business days, 15 to 20 days, and 1 to 21 business days overall. Keep the submission date and chase the case.
