Internet and fibre in Spain: what to expect

Fibre is the standard home-internet choice across most Spanish cities and larger towns. The important question is not simply which companies operate in Spain, but which network reaches your exact property and what the installation requires there.

Fibre is widely available

Urban homes are commonly served by fibre rather than older ADSL connections.

Coverage is address-specific

Availability can differ between neighbouring buildings, floors and urbanizaciones.

Allow time for installation

Straightforward installs can take 2–7 days, but planning for 1–3 weeks is more reliable.

How internet setup works

Three practical steps take you from an address to a working connection.

  1. 1

    Check the exact address

Coverage tools are a useful first check, but only an installer can confirm the available cable, port and route into the property.

  2. 2

    Compare suitable providers

The right option depends on the network at your address, your documents, your timing and the kind of support you need.

  3. 3

    Arrange the installation

Confirm the appointment, answer unknown Spanish calls and make sure the technician can access the property and communications room.

What providers commonly ask for

Requirements vary by provider and plan. These are the documents and practical details that may come up during signup or installation.

Identification
An NIE is the dependable route. Some passport applications are possible but often need manual processing.
Payment details
Most provider flows ask for a Spanish IBAN. Some plans accept eligible SEPA accounts, so check the specific provider.
A Spanish phone number
Providers use it for verification and for the installer to reach you on the day.
The complete address
Include the floor, unit and access details for an apartment building or urbanización.
Someone at the property
An adult or briefed keyholder should be able to approve the cable and router position.
Building access
Arrange access to the building’s communications room before the technician arrives.

Four installation delays you can prevent

Coverage is only the first hurdle. These are the practical problems worth solving before installation day.

Get the communications-room key

Ask the president, administrator or concierge for the RITI or RITU key before the appointment.

Make sure the installer can reach you

Give the provider a working Spanish number and answer unknown calls on installation day.

Check the cable route and permissions

Ask the building administrator whether the existing conduits can be used and whether community or heritage approval is needed.

Ask whose network serves the address

Some providers use another operator’s fibre. Confirm whether the line is shared, allow extra time and keep your old connection until the new one works.
