Octopus Energy Spain, for expats

By Linus Palmqvist, Head of Operations Reviewed by Simon Nilsson Last reviewed

Octopus is a free-market retailer with green positioning and a strong expat reputation. Check the distributor reality, documents and support caveats, or let Settlewell handle it in English.

Is Octopus right for you?

Octopus is one of the clearest modern choices for internationals who want a green, digital retailer and do not need PVPC or Bono Social.

Choose Octopus if

  • You want a modern free-market retailer with no permanence.
  • You value green positioning and transparent terms.
  • You want a provider expats often report as easier to use in English.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need PVPC or Bono Social.
  • Your issue is a distributor or meter problem rather than choosing a retailer.
  • You need passport-only signup confirmed before committing.

What you choose, and what you cannot choose

Spain splits electricity into two jobs. The comercializadora is the retailer that bills you. The distribuidora is the grid company that owns the wires and meter; you cannot choose it.

You choose the retailer

Octopus is the retailer you choose for billing, contract and customer experience.

You cannot choose the grid

Your local distributor. Outages, meter incidents and distributor charges still belong to the assigned grid company for the address.

Regulated route

This retailer is free-market only. It is not the route for PVPC, Spain's government-regulated electricity price, or Bono Social.

Choose your route

You can go direct with Octopus or let Settlewell handle the setup path in English.

What to have ready

Gather these details before you start, whether you do it yourself or ask Settlewell to do it for you.

A clean switch depends on the CUPS, holder details and payment route being ready.

CUPS

The permanent code that identifies your home's electricity supply point. It is on any bill.

Holder and ID details

CUPS, ID details, address, email/phone and IBAN are expected.

IBAN

Passport-only and non-Spanish IBAN acceptance can vary by signup route.

Potencia contratada

The amount of power, in kW, your home can draw at once. Check it before accepting the setup unchanged.

Provider-specific tips

  • Document fit: Octopus normally needs the usual identity and contact details. Passport-only signup is not as clear as some large-provider routes.
  • Property fit: Octopus asks for the same contracted power when you first join; you can change it after activation.

English support reality

Octopus is one of the stronger English-friendly choices.

Octopus is known for good English-language service, which is a big reason many internationals choose it.

What the provider can do

Octopus is known for good English-language service, which is a big reason internationals pick it.

Where Settlewell fits

Settlewell is the English layer for setup and comparison. Octopus is not affiliated with us.

What still belongs to the distributor

Power cuts, meter problems and some activation steps belong to the grid company for the address, not to the retailer you choose.

Compare before you commit

Octopus is a strong fit for many internationals, but Endesa, Iberdrola or Naturgy may fit better depending on documents, English needs and gas.
