N26 in Spain: a guide for expats

By Linus Palmqvist, Head of Operations Reviewed by Simon Nilsson Last reviewed

N26 does give Spain-registered customers an ES IBAN, contrary to outdated German-IBAN advice. It is not a pre-arrival workaround: applicants must actually live in the country where they register.

Is N26 right for your stage of move?

A capable resident fintech account once you genuinely live in Spain, but actively wrong to recommend as an early ES-IBAN shortcut.

Good fit if

  • You are genuinely resident in Spain.
  • You want a Spain-registered account with an ES IBAN.
  • You are comfortable with app-first support.

Check carefully if

  • You are still abroad or only have an NIE.
  • You need a public geographic Spanish service number.
  • You need phone support without a premium plan.

Choose your option

Choose between independent help with your move or checking N26's current process directly.

What stage are you at?

Bank fit changes depending on where you are in the move. Check each stage before treating a bank as a good option.

Before you arrive

Conditional

You cannot register N26 to Spain before you live here. But if you already use N26 from your home country, you can keep using it: its EU IBAN is legally valid for Spanish payments.

Just landed

Conditional

Keep using an N26 account you already hold from home while you settle in. You cannot move its registration to Spain until you genuinely live here.

Available

Once you genuinely live in Spain, you can register N26 to Spain and receive a Spanish ES IBAN. This is an optional upgrade, not a requirement.

IBAN

A Spain-registered N26 account receives a Spanish ES IBAN; the common German-IBAN advice is outdated.

Fees

As of 11 July 2026, Standard was free and paid plans ranged from €4.90 to €16.90 per month; physical-card delivery was €10 standard or €25 express. Check current terms.

Prepare before you apply

Match the option to your current stage, then confirm the live bank requirements before submitting an application.

  1. 1

    Wait until resident

Register Spain only once you genuinely reside in Spain.

  2. 2

    Choose the right plan

Check N26’s current plan and card-delivery terms before selecting one.

  3. 3

    Use your address carefully

Allow for physical-card delivery if you need one; standard delivery was listed as up to 10 working days.

English support reality

English app and support experience is likely good once resident, but normal support is primarily in-app chat.

Main option

Support is primarily in-app chat, listed 07:00 to 23:00 CET.

Phone support

Phone support is reserved for premium tiers; there is no general public Spanish geographic number.
