Mapfre home insurance in Spain

By Linus Palmqvist, Head of Operations Reviewed by Simon Nilsson Last reviewed

Mapfre has the highest independent satisfaction score of the six insurers we compared, but English is the weak spot. Read what it does well, the entry-plan catch, and how Settlewell bridges the language.

Is Mapfre a good choice?

Mapfre has the highest independent satisfaction score of the six insurers we compared, on the OCU 2025 survey. That survey measures member satisfaction rather than claim quality, and its sample sizes vary a lot between insurers, so read it as one signal, not a verdict. Its range runs from a modular entry plan to a premium one. English is the weak spot: the site and the policy are in Spanish, help is agent- or branch-dependent, and there is no policy in English. The other catch is that its entry Tú Eliges plan can be set up without water damage or liability, so the plan name alone tells you little.

Mapfre can suit you if

  • You want an insurer with a branch you can visit locally.
  • Independent customer satisfaction matters to you: Mapfre scores highest of the six.
  • You are happy for Settlewell to bridge the language and handle the setup.

Check carefully if

  • You want English service or an English policy: Mapfre is the weakest of the six for both.
  • You are quoted the entry Tú Eliges plan: it can be set up without water damage or liability, so check what is included.
  • You want to run tourist lets: ordinary Mapfre home cover is not presented for that.

Choose your route

You can set Mapfre up through Settlewell, or go to Mapfre directly. Either way, check that water damage and liability are included, and get the Spanish policy documents.

What to get right before you buy

These four decide whether a home policy pays out properly. Get them right whoever you buy from.

  1. 1

Rebuilding value, not the purchase price

Insure the cost to rebuild the home, leaving out the land. Insuring for the price you paid can leave you badly under-insured.

  2. 2

    How the property is used

Main home, second home, long-term rental and holiday let are different risks. Describe the real use, because the wrong category can cause problems at claim time.

  3. 3

What your community policy already covers

A building's community policy may cover the structure but usually not your belongings, your private pipes or your own liability. Check before you double up or leave a gap.

  4. 4

The right plan for the cover you need

Plans include different things, and useful cover can sit higher up the range. Pick the plan around the cover you actually want.

How the Mapfre cover is set up

Mapfre runs a broad range from a modular entry plan to a premium one, and English is the weak spot, so Settlewell bridges the language and checks the plan includes what you need.

A modular entry plan

The entry Tú Eliges plan can be set up without water damage or liability, so a Mapfre-branded policy does not automatically include them. Check what is on the schedule.

English is limited

The main site and the policy are in Spanish, and there is no central English claims line, though a local branch may help in person. We bridge the language for you.

Older public wording

The public wording currently linked is dated 2020, so we do not publish its exact limits. Ask for the current conditions before you buy.

Compare it with the other insurers

This is one option, and the right insurer depends on how you use your home. See all six side by side before you decide.
